Unlike the northern parks, here wildlife revolves around the <b data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"225\">river system<\/b>. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fd8ae0a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fd8ae0a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5 data-start=\"588\" data-end=\"607\">\ud83d\udcd0 <strong>Area<\/strong><\/h5><p data-start=\"608\" data-end=\"694\">Approximately <b data-path-to-node=\"6,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"21\">50,000 to 55,000 km\u00b2<\/b> for the entire Selous ecosystem (larger than Switzerland or four times the size of the Serengeti). Nyerere National Park covers about 30,000 km\u00b2 of this area. <\/p><h5 data-start=\"696\" data-end=\"717\">\ud83d\udccd <strong>Location<\/strong><\/h5><p data-start=\"718\" data-end=\"878\">The park is located in <b data-path-to-node=\"6,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"40\">southeastern Tanzania<\/b>, about 230 km southwest of Dar es Salaam.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8819904 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8819904\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><strong>Wildlife in the Park<\/strong><\/h5><ul><li><p data-path-to-node=\"6,2,1,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,2,1,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Big Five:<\/b> Lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and black rhinos (rarer).<\/p><\/li><li><p data-path-to-node=\"6,2,1,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,2,1,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Signature species:<\/b> The park has one of the world&#8217;s largest populations of <b data-path-to-node=\"6,2,1,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"73\">African wild dogs<\/b>.<\/p><\/li><li><p data-path-to-node=\"6,2,1,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,2,1,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Aquatic wildlife:<\/b> Thousands of hippos and Nile crocodiles inhabit the Rufiji River and lakes.<\/p><\/li><li><p data-path-to-node=\"6,2,1,3,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,2,1,3,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Other species:<\/b> Masai giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and numerous antelopes (elands, greater kudus, impalas).<\/p><\/li><li><p data-path-to-node=\"6,2,1,4,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,2,1,4,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Birdwatching:<\/b> Over 440 bird species recorded.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-39397d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"39397d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5><strong>How to Get There<\/strong><\/h5><ul><li><p data-path-to-node=\"6,3,1,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,3,1,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">By air (recommended):<\/b> This is the fastest and most comfortable option. Light aircraft (air taxis) connect <b data-path-to-node=\"6,3,1,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"137\">Dar es Salaam<\/b> (45 min) or <b data-path-to-node=\"6,3,1,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"163\">Zanzibar<\/b> (1 hour) daily to the park&#8217;s various airstrips (Mtemere, Siwandu, Beho Beho, etc.). <\/p><\/li><li><p data-path-to-node=\"6,3,1,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"6,3,1,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">By road:<\/b> The journey from Dar es Salaam takes approximately <b data-path-to-node=\"6,3,1,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"60\">6 to 7 hours<\/b> by road. Access is usually via the Mtemere gate. This complex network of channels, lagoons, and oxbow lakes enables a unique experience in Tanzania: <b data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"146\">boat safaris<\/b>. Gliding silently on the water to watch an elephant drinking just meters away is one of the most memorable moments of a trip to Selous.  <\/p><h3 data-path-to-node=\"12\"><b data-path-to-node=\"12\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">The Legacy of Frederick Selous<\/b><\/h3><p data-path-to-node=\"13\">The park is named after <b data-path-to-node=\"13\" data-index-in-node=\"24\">Frederick Courtney Selous<\/b>, a famous 19th-century British explorer, hunter, and naturalist who inspired the character of Allan Quatermain. His grave can still be found in the northern section of the park, near Beho Beho. <\/p><h3 data-path-to-node=\"14\"><b data-path-to-node=\"14\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Stiegler&#8217;s Gorge<\/b><\/h3><p data-path-to-node=\"15\">A spectacular canyon where the Rufiji River plunges into a narrow gorge about 100 meters deep.
